Washington DCYF highlights infant safe-sleep guidance in October update
The state’s October 16 update shares safe-sleep reminders for parents and caregivers during Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Prevention Month.
Washington’s Department of Children, Youth, and Families published a safe-sleep reminder on October 16 for Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Prevention Month. The statewide information is relevant to Island County families and anyone caring for an infant.
DCYF describes the ABCDs of safe sleep as sleeping alone, on the back, in a crib, with caregivers who do not smoke. Its update also summarizes American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for a firm, flat, non-inclined sleep surface and for room-sharing without bed-sharing during the first six months.
The agency notes that routine sleep in sitting devices such as car seats, swings, and strollers should be avoided, particularly for infants younger than four months. It also cautions against commercial devices claiming to reduce SIDS or other sleep-related deaths.
The DCYF update links to further guidance from the agency and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
